Building a website? from scratch or using CMS? Find out which is the best way!

Once you have decided to take your business to the next level, the one thing that will surely cross your mind is building a website on your own. The idea of creating a website can be both exciting and daunting. The reason being it is the face of your company and you want it to look and work the best.

The only issue is deciding whether to build your website from scratch using HTML or simply use Content Management Systems like WordPress. This can be quite difficult as both have their pros and cons to them. The first thing you need to do is identify what kind of website you would like to have and then go about looking for answers like what would float your boat. In this blog, we have laid out some of the pros and cons of both ways of building your website. You can take a call based on your requirements.

Building a website from scratch:

Building a website from scratch means one thing for sure: you can customise your website the way you want it. This is simply not feasible with any content management system. You will have to work around a confined set of themes. Below are some of the pros of building a website from scratch:

Pros:

  • SEO friendly: A custom build website is much more friendly than a site built using a CMS. This means one thing – your website will have better visibility and it will appear on top of each relevant search. You will have better conversions and leads generated this way.
  • Unique: Custom built websites are unique and they stand out in a crowd. When every other website looks alike, your website will be unique as a blue diamond undoubtedly.
  • You can make any number of changes you may want at any point in time. Incorporate any feature you will need. Albeit, making changes is possible in a CMS, it is not possible to add any feature as we may please. We will have to go through their extensive library of apps and features to find out if we have the right match for our requirement.
  • The website can be fixed first hand, if it needs any fixing. The original developer will be able to service your website at any point in time.

Cons:

  • They are expensive. While CMS are available at a much lower cost, a custom built website will cost you a fortune which is definitely a downside.
  • It is time consuming. As it is completely customised to the requirements of the owner, it takes much more time to build each feature.
  • Any change you might want to make to your website will have to await the availability of the developers. This can be quite a hassle.

Website built using Content Management Systems:

  • Save Money: Building websites using a CMS can save you a lot of money. Hiring a website developer can cost you anywhere between $2000 and $6000. Besides, you will also have to think about the other charges like hosting, etc.
  • Umpteen website themes: You can easily make your website attractive from the thousands of themes to choose from.
  • Time saving: You can build an entire website in under 10 minutes. This could save not only time but also a lot of money.
  • You don’t need to be an expert to build your website. Anyone can build their website the way they want it. CMS is beginner friendly.
  • Security is much better on a CMS website than a custom build website which is a huge advantage
  • Content Management is easier in CMS websites. This is not the case in custom made websites.
  • Service of the website will be available round the clock unlike custom built websites.

Cons:

  • Customising the website according to your needs is difficult
  • The sites become vulnerable when there are updates happening. CMS keeps releasing updates and it is important to update your website for its better performance but this also makes sites vulnerable.

Although the cons for a CMS website are limited, it is upto you to decide what sort of a website you will want. So the call is yours.
