Covid 19 and Animals – Here’s everything you need to know

Covid 19 has of course been the topic of the year. People had been discussing, making up things, more discussing and more of making up things. Facts remain unnoticed. Somehow people have brought their speculations into the real world and the panic is endless. WhatsApp university is now a thing; that’s how things have become. People with pets panic even more. As we all know, the virus initially originated from animals.

The larger question still remains. Will the virus transfer from my pets to me or to pets through me? And various other questions. To put things in perspective, we did some research on the topic and here’s everything you need to know if you own animals.

Here’s everything you need to know (Covid 19)

  1.  Animals can be infected by the virus. Cats are more sensitive than dogs. SARS seem to have an impact on cats and not dogs.
  2. There is very little evidence that suggests that pet animals can transfer the virus. For example, there were rare cases when human influenza was transmitted to dogs. But the dog didn’t transmit the virus further, this is considered a dead end. Since the virus was not a flu virus, it did not multiply enough in dogs to get transmitted. Similar theory may be applicable to covid-19.
  3. It is up to us to keep our pets safe. Just like we have to maintain our social distance, it is necessary for animals to be kept at a distance. This is absolutely necessary if someone in your household tests positive. The pets have to be taken to the vet and tests should be done. This is to make sure the pet is free from viruses, just to be sure. We can’t emphasise enough on the social distancing part even for our pets, testing positive or not.
  4. So, one more interesting thing about pets is that even their haircoats can carry the virus for a particular amount of time. It is absolutely necessary to wash your hands and give your pet a wash, if you happen to go to the vet or even take them out for a walk. This is necessary because humans can contract the virus if it is found on pets’ haircoats, so stay safe.
  5. There is one more important thing to address. What if the owner wants to surrender an infected pet to shelters? We advise you to not do such a thing and spread the virus. If your pet tests positive, which is a rare occurrence in itself, isolate him rather than taking him to a shelter and putting everyone at risk.
  6. Have confidence, your pet won’t get influenced by the pets from another family unit. So, there is no reason to panic if you maintain your social distance.
